AppalCART is the transportation authority that provides public transportation for all of Boone and Watauga County, including Appalachian State University. Student parking on the main campus is very limited, so students are strongly encouraged to ride AppalCART whenever possible. Because the service is subsidized by the University, students may ride free of charge. Bus shelters are located at all perimeter parking areas, as well as many other campus locations. For additional information about AppalCART's services, call (828) 264-2278, or visit the AppalCART web site.
Mountaineer Safe Ride
The mission of the Appalachian State University Mountaineer Safe Ride service is to provide safe and secure transportation for students during the evening hours. The service is offered during the fall and spring semesters and is available from 7:00 p.m. until 3:00 a.m., seven days a week, excluding holidays. (First call for service will be taken at 7:00 p.m., and last call for service will be taken at 2:45 a.m.) The service area is strictly limited to university properties only (parking lots, residence halls and academic buildings.)
To obtain transportation from Mountaineer Safe Ride, simply call 828-262-RIDE (7433) and advise the dispatcher of your location and destination. A passenger van prominently marked, "Mountaineer Safe Ride" will be dispatched, and you will be given the approximate time it will arrive at your location.
Due to the large volume of students returning to campus on Sunday evenings, the Mountaineer Safe Ride service does not serve the Hwy 105 freshman parking area on Sunday evenings. Instead, a dedicated shuttle service to campus is provided every 30 minutes by a large bus from the AppalCART fleet. For more information, please call Mountaineer Safe Ride at 828-262-RIDE (7433). Please direct any questions to the Parking and Traffic Department at 262-2878.
